IPE, HEA and HEB are different section series. Their geometry and properties help the engineer select a member, but the section name alone does not establish a suitable beam for your opening.
Flanges and web
An I- or H-shaped section has flanges connected by a web. Different section series and sizes have different proportions and structural properties. The illustrations show the geometry so you can follow a design discussion; they do not provide a load table or a selection rule.
Other section shapes
Channels, rectangular hollow sections and circular hollow sections may be used where the design calls for them. A column can have a different section type from the beam it supports. Connections, stability and fabrication requirements influence the choice.
What the calculation specifies
The engineer selects the series, dimensions and steel grade together with the supports and connection details. Strength, deflection and the behaviour of the complete system matter. A wider flange or heavier-looking member is not a universal answer to every opening.
Order from the agreed documents
Fabrication should follow the current project drawings and specifications. Coordinate dimensions, plates, connections and protection before ordering. Never substitute a section based only on appearance or an example photograph.
Frequently asked questions
Is HEB always the right choice for a load-bearing wall?
No. Selection depends on the specific design and the complete structural system.
Can two different profiles look similar?
Yes. Use the specified series, size and grade in the documents; visual resemblance is not a reliable material specification.
