Decide what the room should feel like

A visible member can define the transition between two spaces, while an enclosure can create a quieter ceiling line. Gather a few examples and describe the headroom and sightlines you want to preserve.

The location and dimensions of the beam follow from the assessed structure. Concealing it within an existing floor is not a standard option for every home. Coordinate the desired appearance with the engineer before assuming a flush ceiling.

Protection is part of the detail

An exposed finish still needs the protection required by the design and applicable conditions. Paint, corrosion protection, fire protection and a decorative enclosure serve different purposes. Agree the correct system and responsibility rather than choosing from appearance alone.

Specify the junctions

Describe how the beam meets walls, columns, lighting and the ceiling. Ask what surfaces are repaired and who paints them. A small sample or detail discussion can prevent a mismatch between the structural scope and your interior expectations.
